Small Business and The Social Media Revolution

Thursday, June 2, 2011 2:06 PM CDT
Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are used by millions of people around the world to instantly connect with other online users. You may find a viral video of a kid with incredible vocals...mature beyond their age. You could follow a Facebook friend as they travel across the globe sharing their adventure in dramatic pictures and words. The possibilities are endless and they apply to your small business, too.

Many small businesses have yet to create an online presence and have not taken advantage of social media. Some feel they’re too small or simply can’t afford it. In actuality, your business can’t afford not to integrate social media into the overall marketing strategy. First, social media is the most cost-effective way to increase visibility for your company. You can immediately set up a free online profile to start promoting your business in your local community. Use Facebook to educate potential customers or to pass along a special discount. As you build a rapport with the online community, people begin to know, like, and trust you, increasing the chance that they will do business with you. Social media has leveled the playing field for small businesses and their larger competitors.

So, does your business need social media? If you would like to connect with people who are actively searching for what you are selling, then the answer is “yes”. I suggest every business start their social media marketing with Facebook and YouTube. Facebook allows you to set up a company profile then add existing customers and potentially new customers as “friends”. As you connect and share with others on Facebook, your business takes on a new online identity attracting those interested in your company. Likewise, YouTube enhances your online presence, by allowing you to share compelling video with potential customers. On the Internet video sells and should be a key component of your social media strategy. With social media, you don’t need a big budget to have a huge impact.
